Find out how you and your partner can avoid an unwanted pregnancy by choosing the contraception that’s right for you.
The progestogen only pill (or POP for short) is a contraceptive pill for women that contains a special chemical (or hormone) called progestogen.
POP works by thickening the mucus in the cervix. This stops the sperm being able to travel through it. It also changes the lining of the uterus so the egg can’t settle (implant) into the womb.
If POP is taken correctly it is 96-99% effective at preventing pregnancies.
POP is one tablet that you take every day. It is important you take it at the SAME time every day.
You can get the POP from a GP practice or sexual health clinic. You will need to see a nurse or doctor to discuss whether POP is the right contraceptive for you. To find a GP (doctor) clinic or sexual health clinic in Hawke’s Bay, click here.
No, the POP does not protect against STIs. To protect against STIs, you should use a condom every time you have sex.
