Genital Warts
What are genital warts?
Genital warts are small lumps which can occur around the genitals and anus.
Genital warts are caused by a virus (the Human Papilloma Virus or HPV). HPV is a very common virus that many sexually active people carry in their body but not everyone who has HPV will develop genital warts.
How do you get them?
HPV and genital warts are spread by close skin-to-skin contact with someone who has the infection. This includes vaginal, anal and oral sex.
A pregnant woman can pass the infection to her baby during childbirth.
What are the symptoms?
Genital warts look like normal warts that appear on other parts of your body and may occur in the following places:
Symptom for females:
- In and around the vagina or anus
- On the cervix
- On the groin or thighs
Symptoms for males:
- On the penis or under the foreskin
- On the scrotum (balls)
- Around the anus
- On the groin or thighs
How do you treat it?
There is no cure for HPV as the virus can remain dormant (asleep) in the skin for many years.
However, there are a number of different ways to treat genital warts, including:
- A cream or paint to put on the warts
- Freezing the warts off
- Having an operation to remove them
Most people will need more than one treatment to get rid of genital warts.
