Depo Provera Injection (Depo)
What is the Depo Provera injection?
Depo Provera (or Depo for short) is an injection of a chemical (or hormone) called progesterone and lasts for 12 weeks.
How does it work?
Depo works in three ways:
- It stops the ovaries from releasing an egg each month
- It thickens the mucus in the cervix so the sperm can’t travel through it
- It changes the lining of the uterus so the egg can’t settle (implant) into the womb to start a pregnancy
The Depo injection is given in the muscle at the top of your butt cheek every 12 weeks. Depo is more than 99% effective.
Where can I get the Depo injection?
You can get the Depo injection from a GP (doctor) or sexual health clinic. You will need to see a nurse or doctor to discuss whether Depo is the right contraceptive for you.

What are the benefits of Depo?
- You don’t have to remember to take a pill every day
- It is very effective at preventing pregnancy
- It may decrease your PMT symptoms and help with heavy, painful periods
- Depo reduces the risk of endometrial cancer
What are the disadvantages of Depo?
- You must remember to have an injection every 12 weeks
- You may have irregular periods or bleed more than normal
- It can take a while to become pregnant after you stop having the injections
- Taking the Depo injection may cause a reduction in bone density. This is likely to return to normal after you stop having Depo injections.
Does Depo protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)?
No, Depo does not protect against STIs. To protect against STIs, you should use a condom every time you have sex.
