Non-Specific Urethritis
What is non-specific urethritis?
Non-specific urethritis (or NSU for short) is an infection in males that causes swelling or pain within the penis (or more precisely the urethra or wee tube). It’s usually caused by a sexually transmitted infection (STI) such as chlamydia or gonorrhoea.
How do you get it?
NSU is usually caught by having unprotected sex (not using a condom). You can get NSU from vaginal, anal and oral sex or sex play.
What are the symptoms?
Symptoms can include:
- Discharge from the urethra (wee tube)
- Pain or discomfort when weeing
- Itching in the urethra
Sometimes there may not be any symptoms.
How do you treat it?
NSU is treated with antibiotics.
