Trichomonasis
What is trichomonasis?
Trichomonasis (called Trike for short) is a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) caused by a very small parasite. It’s common for both women and men to get Trike.
How do you get it?
Trike is spread by having unprotected sex (not using a condom) with someone who already has the infection. It can be spread through vaginal, oral and anal sex as well as during sex play or sharing sex toys, for example using a vibrator. If you use a condom every time you have sex, you are better protected from trike.
What are the symptoms?
Symptoms usually take between 1 to 4 weeks to appear after sexual contact with a person with trike.
Females may have some of the following:
- A greenish, frothy or watery discharge from the vagina
- A bad or fishy smell in the genital area
- Itchy, sore, hot or swollen genitals
- Stinging when weeing.
Males – most men have no symptoms however they can still pass trike on.
- Sometimes, men may have a discharge or fluid leaking from their penis and/or pain when weeing.
How do you treat it?
Trike is treated with an antibiotic.
