Gonorrhoea
What is gonorrhoea?
Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that both males and females can get. Gonorrhoea is a bacterial infection and can cause serious problems if it’s not treated. It’s important to get Gonorrhoea treated early to have the best chance of getting rid of it.
How do you get it?
Gonorrhoea is spread by having unprotected sex (not using a condom) with someone who has it. It can be spread through vaginal, oral, anal sex and sex play. It can also be passed from mother to baby during childbirth.
What are the symptoms?
For Females
Women usually have no symptoms of gonorrhea but can sometimes have:
- Unusual vaginal discharge
- Irregular bleeding or spotting between periods
- Pelvic pain or pain when weeing
- Discharge or bleeding from the anus (if you have had anal sex)
For Males
Men are more likely to have symptoms including:
- Thick yellow or white discharge from the penis
- Burning or pain when weeing
- Sometimes there can be painful or swollen testicles
- Discharge or bleeding from the anus if you have had anal sex
How do you treat it?
Gonorrheoa is treated with antibiotics. Sometimes this can require an injection or a longer course of antibiotics if the infections is serious.
