Candidiasis (Thrush)
What is candidiasis?
Candidiasis, commonly called thrush, is an infection caused by having too much yeast on the skin. Both males and females can get thrush.
How do you get it?
Thrush grows best in warm, moist areas such as the folds in your skin. It can be caused by:
- Having sex with someone who already has thrush
- If the weather is warm
- Clothes that are too tight
- Not washing enough
- Not changing your underwear often enough
- Sometimes when taking antibiotics you could get thrush
- Illness
- Pregnancy
- Being overweight
People who are not sexually active can get thrush, so it is not generally considered to be an STI.
What are the symptoms?
Thrush is more common in women but it can also affect men. It is more likely to occur in men who are not circumcised.
Symptoms for Females:
- Itching around the vagina
- Soreness and redness in the vaginal area
- Thick, whitish, cottage cheese-like discharge from the vagina
Symptoms For Males:
- Itching or burning on the tip of the penis
- A red rash at the opening of the penis
- A discharge under the foreskin
How do you treat it?
Thrush is treated with creams or tablets (placed in the vagina). If you are getting infections quite often, your doctor or nurse may give you antifungals or herbal supplements to help stop them.
