What is an IUD?

An intrauterine Device (or IUD for short) is a small contraceptive device that is fitted inside a woman’s womb.

How does it work?

There are 2 types of IUDs – Mirena and Copper IUDs.

Both types of IUDs work by stopping the sperm moving through the womb towards the egg. If the egg does become fertilised, the IUD prevents the egg from settling (implanting) into the womb.

IUD’s can stay in place for more than 5 years and are 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.

Where can I get an IUD?

You will need to see a nurse or doctor to discuss whether an IUD is the right contraceptive for you.

Having an IUD inserted is a very simple and safe procedure. It can be done by a doctor or nurse at a sexual health clinic and will take around 5-10 minutes.

What are the benefits of an IUD?

• Fit and forget – you don’t need to remember to take a pill every day
• Long lasting – an IUD will last for more than 5 years
• It is more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy
• You can have your IUD removed at any time
• It has no permanent effect on future pregnancy – as soon as you remove the IUD, you can become pregnant

What are the disadvantages of an IUD?

• An IUD has to be inserted and removed by a doctor or nurse
• You may get irregular, light bleeding for more days than usual
• There is a very small chance (1%) of getting an infection when the IUD is put in
• Sometimes the IUD can come out by itself

Does an IUD protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)?

No, an IUD does not protect you against STIs. To protect against STIs, you should use a condom every time you have sex.
