Oral sex & STIs

Can I get an STI from having oral sex?

YES, you can get an STI from giving or receiving oral sex. You can reduce your chances of getting an STI by using a condom or dental dam when having oral sex. Try using flavoured condoms if you don’t like the taste!

Some infections such as herpes, HPV and syphilis are passed on while having unprotected sex which includes oral sex. Barriers such as condoms or dental dams would stop this.

The risk of getting HIV through oral sex is low but your risk is increased if you or your partner has a sore throat, mouth sores or bleeding gums.

Often STIs don’t have any signs or symptoms, so if you’re giving or receiving oral sex, it’s a good idea to get checked out regularly. Go to our Clinic Finder for a list of sexual health clinics in Hawke’s Bay.
